The Galloping Grandma is off on another Adventure - this time to the Galapagos Islands (on the Equator off the coast of Ecuador in the Pacific Ocean) and the Amazon Rain Forest!! A 20-day holiday incorporating a 2-week cruise around the 'Enchanted Isles' in an elegant two-masted Topsail Schooner (without ever having to lift a finger in the Galley!), a visit to Antisana (all that snow and no skis!), plus a 4-day extension to the Amazon Jungle....... me and spiders?????

Sunday 12 Feb
Sunday 12 Feb 2012.
Motored to Cormorant Point on Floreana Island and saw flamingos on a brackish lagoon. A Galapagos yellow fly-catcher kept flying at and perching on Mike’s camera lens. I had sun glasses on and it flew at its reflection in my lenses and almost perched on my hat. I was amazed that I did not flinch!!! We stood in the shallows watching small and medium sized sting rays surfing the waves and feeding from the sand in the shallows – we had to take care to shuffle our feet and not lift them while in the water – to do so could mean stepping on a small sting-ray with painful consequences!
We went out to The Devil’s Crown to snorkel. The water was very clear and very deep with a strong current in places. Jan and I had to be towed by the Panga at one point as we could not make headway in the current. Jan got tired and returned to the Panga but I continued and was rewarded by having 5 white-tipped reef sharks swimming just below me. I was amazed that I was not in the least frightened (they were taking absolutely no notice of me). If only I’d had an underwater camera!!! I hope S-J will send me some of her photos…..
Our afternoon walk was to post cards in the unique post box in Post Office Bay – I waited in the shallows as the sand was too hot for me to walk on without sandals (due to my sting/bite and swollen foot). We then motored on to Puerto Velasco Ibarra for a trek to Asilo de la Paz.
